My earliest images are of my mom at the mirror over her bureau.
Getting ready for work, picking her hair into a full and perfect Afro, or wrapping it in printed cloth, fold after fold, until it held. The care showed in the result. Those images live with me every day. My dad was never not dressed. Every morning, impeccable. Nothing loud, nothing trying. A person could say everything without saying anything. I was a child and I understood it completely.

The places change; the source never does.
I come from more places than one passport explains. The thread running through all of them is older than any of them. You feel it in a bassline reverberating through your body. You feel it on the first warm day of the year, when everyone is suddenly outside at the same time. You feel it in a kitchen where the same pot has been going since morning. So I stopped naming the places. The feeling was always the point.
